Airway Compromise Due to Wound Hematoma Following Anterior Cervical Spine Surgery
One of the most serious adverse events associated with anterior cervical spine surgery is wound hematoma resulting in airway compromise. The reported incidence of this postoperative complication has varied from 0.2% to 1.9%. Obstruction of the airway secondary to bleeding presents a challenging clinical scenario given the rapidity of onset, distorted anatomy of the upper respiratory tract, urge...
متن کاملAirway management for cervical spine injury.
In this review, important factors related to initial management, diagnosis, airway, and anesthetic management of patients with cervical spine injury (CSI) are discussed. Early diagnostic and clinical evaluation is important in excluding CSI. In-line stabilization reduces movement of the cervical spine. Tracheal intubation under fiberscopic control, offers safety, and comfort to the patient. How...

Cervical spine surgery is one of the most commonly performed spine surgeries in the United States, and 90% of the cases are related to degenerative cervical spine disease (the rest to cervical spine trauma and/or instability). The airway management for cervical spine surgery represents a crucial step in the anesthetic management to avoid injury to the cervical cord. The crux for upper airway ma...
متن کاملAirway management in cervical spine injury
To minimize risk of spinal cord injury, airway management providers must understand the anatomic and functional relationship between the airway, cervical column, and spinal cord. Patients with known or suspected cervical spine injury may require emergent intubation for airway protection and ventilatory support or elective intubation for surgery with or without rigid neck stabilization (i.e., ha...
متن کاملTuberculosis of the upper cervical spine.
Six patients, aged between 3 and 51 years, with tuberculosis of the upper cervical spine were studied. Prominent features of the disease included pain and stiffness, paralysis, swelling of the retropharyngeal soft tissue, osteolytic erosions, and atlanto-axial subluxation. Cure was obtained with antibiotics, transoral decompression and C1-2 fusion.
